0:04Welcome back. Today we build a Chrome extension.
0:09First, where do YouTube transcripts come from?
0:15Every video with captions already has one.
0:21So we add a copy button right under the video.
0:27One click, and the whole talk is text.
How it works

From video to text in three steps.

  1. Add ScriptSnap to Chrome

One click from the Chrome Web Store. No account to create.

  2. Open any YouTube video

Transcript, Copy and Download buttons appear under the title.

  3. Copy or download

Paste the text anywhere, or save it as TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, CSV or JSON.

Features

More than a copy button.

Everything you need to read, search, quote and reuse what was said in a video.

A transcript panel that follows the video

The line being spoken lights up and scrolls into view. Click any timestamp to jump to that moment. Chapters appear right inside the transcript.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How do I download a YouTube transcript?

Install ScriptSnap from the Chrome Web Store, open any YouTube video, and click Download under the video title. Pick TXT, SRT, VTT, Markdown, CSV or JSON and the file saves to your computer.

Can I copy a YouTube transcript with timestamps?

Yes. Click Copy under the video to copy the full transcript with timestamps like [2:15]. You can switch timestamps off in settings to copy plain text instead.

Is ScriptSnap free?

Yes. ScriptSnap is free, with no account, no daily limits and no ads.

Does it work on videos without captions?

ScriptSnap reads the captions YouTube already has, including auto-generated ones. If a video has no captions at all, there is no transcript to copy.

Can I download YouTube subtitles as an SRT file?

Yes. Choose Subtitles (SRT) from the Download menu. You get a standard .srt file with numbered cues and start and end times, ready for video editors and media players.

Does ScriptSnap collect my data?

No. Everything runs in your browser. ScriptSnap has no servers, no analytics and no account, and it only asks for one permission: storage, to remember your settings.

Can ScriptSnap summarize a video with AI?

ScriptSnap builds a ready-made prompt for a summary, study notes, a blog post or a thread, copies it with the transcript, and opens ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini so you can paste it in. It never sends anything on its own.

Which languages are supported?

Any language the video has captions in. You can switch between caption tracks, and use auto-translate when YouTube offers it for that video.
